INDIAN NATIONAL EXTRADITED FROM CZECH REPUBLIC TO US OVER SIKH ACTIVIST MURDER PLOT

NEW DELHI, June 17 (Bernama) -- An Indian national accused of being part of a murder-for-hire plot against a United States-based Sikh activist was extradited from the Czech Republic to the US.

The US Justice Department had charged 52-year-old Nikhil Gupta in the foiled plan to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a prominent Sikh separatist leader who is considered a terrorist by the Indian government.

The Czech Republic arrested Gupta last year following an American government’s request.

Gupta is listed on the Board of Prisons inmate website as being held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, according to a Washington Post report.

The Czech Constitutional Court recently rejected a petition by Gupta against his extradition.

US prosecutors have said an Indian government agency official, working together with others, directed the assassination plot and hired Gupta to carry it out.

Gupta had travelled to the Czech Republic from India before he was arrested at Prague airport in June last year.
