US CONGRESS DELEGATION MEETS DALAI LAMA IN INDIA DESPITE CHINA'S OBJECTIONS

NEW DELHI, June 19 (Bernama) -- A US Congress delegation, including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, on Wednesday met the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan leader living in exile in India, despite China's strong objections.

The group, headed by House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Michael McCaul, aims to "highlight the bipartisan support in the US Congress for Tibet to have a say in their own future".

The 88-year-old Buddhist spiritual figure is based in Dharamshala town in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

McCaul speaking to reporters after his meeting said one of the issues he talked about was "to have a free Tibet".

China, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its embassy in New Delhi, accused the Dalai Lama of being engaged in "anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion".

"We urge the US side to fully recognise the anti-China separatist nature of the Dalai group, honour the commitments the US has made to China on issues related to Xizang (Tibet), (and) stop sending the wrong signal to the world," it said.
