MALANG (Indonesia), July 5 (Bernama) -- Karate exponent H. Sureeya Shankar ensured that the Malaysian contingent achieved the target set by the Higher Education Ministry at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024 by securing the country's 35th gold medal today.
The golden moment arrived when Sureeya easily defeated Thai challenger Calermpon Piwlaaiad 9-1 in the final of the under 60 kilogrammes (kg) category held at Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA).
He defeated Indonesia's Muhammad Yusof Bintang Susanto 11-3 in the qualifying round to advance to the final.
Sureeya, when interviewed by reporters, expressed great joy at retaining the gold he won at the 2022 AUG in Ubon Ratchathani and also completing Malaysia's gold medal target here.
"I'm very happy. The last time I got gold and this year too. In the qualifying round earlier, my challenger tried to bring me down with leg tackles. I was slightly injured, but I tried to strengthen my spirit to reach the final," he said after the match.
In addition to the gold in the men's kumite -60kg category, Malaysia picked up five more gold medals today - through the men's and women's 4x400 metres relay in athletics, Mohd Rizzua Haizad Muhamad (110m hurdles), Muhammad Syafiq Zuber (taekwondo) and Muhammad Firdaus Mohd Israj (pencak silat).
