LARUT, July 11 (Bernama) -- A total of 500 to 1,000 metric tons of fresh premium durians, especially of the Musang King variety will be exported to China this October, Agriculture director-general Datuk Nor Sam Alwi said.

The durians will be exported through 52 processing and packaging centres owned by the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry throughout the country, she added.

“We expect (it exported in) October but everything depends on the speed and approval from the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC), while the supply of premium durians are from farmers registered under the ministry who have Malaysian Good Agricultural Practices (myGAP) certification,” she said when met after an engagement session with durian producers for the China market at the Federal Agricultural Marketing Agency (FAMA) operations centre here today, with FAMA chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli in attendance.

Aminuddin shared that the engagement session with 150 participants was to provide information on the durian market trends and demand in China.

“It also provided detailed information on the export procedures and protocols, including regulations and standards that require compliance,” he said as he expressed his hope that the effort would not only strengthen the export supply chain but also boost the efficiency of durian procurement from farms to the international market.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu had previously signed a protocol on phytosanitary protocols for the exportation of fresh durian with the GACC to expand the sale of durian from Malaysia to China.

He was reported to have said on July 1 that the ministry was in the process of finalising the phytosanitary certification format with the GACC for export approval.
