KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 (Bernama) -- The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the highest judicial body of the United Nations (UN), is set to announce its advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967, today.

ICJ President Judge Nawaf Salam will deliver the Advisory Opinion in a public sitting scheduled to take place at the Peace Palace in The Hague at 3pm.

On December 30, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution requesting the ICJ to give an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian Territories since 1967, how the policies and practices of Israel affect the legal status of the Occupation, and what are the legal consequences that arise for all states and the UN from this status.

The court began deliberations on the matter on February 26 last year, hearing arguments and presentations over a week from Palestine and 49 UN member states, including South Africa, Malaysia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Russia, France, Gambia, Guyana, Hungary, China, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Japan, Jordan, Libya, Tunisia, Spain, and Indonesia.

Three international organisations – the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the African Union, and the Arab League – also presented their arguments, according to Palestinian news agency (WAFA).

The ICJ's advisory opinion comes amid increasing international legal pressures on Israel, the occupying power, over its ongoing military aggression in Gaza and its continuous atrocities in the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem.
