D'amato Wins Olympic Gold As Biles And Others Fall Off Beam

PARIS, Aug 5 (Bernama-dpa) -- Alice D'Amato seized Italy's first Olympic women's gymnastics gold after US star Simone Biles and others fell off the beam in a dramatic final on Monday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

D'Amato, part of the Italian team which took a surprise silver behind Biles at the Americans last week, won with an elegant and relaxed 14.366.

China's Zhou Yaqin was second while Manila Esposito took bronze for the Italians as Brazilian Rebeca Andrade was surprisingly placed in fourth by the judges after a strong routine.

An angry Biles was fifth.

She had already won the team, all-around and vault competition in the French capital to go with her four golds from Rio, but her chance of matching Larisa Latynina's gymnastics record of nine golds at these Games is over with just the floor final left later.
