MOSCOW, Aug 12 (Bernama-dpa) -- Around 120,000 people have been evacuated so far as a result of the Ukrainian advance into the Russian region of Kursk, the local governor said on Monday, reported the German news agency (dpa).

A further 60,000 people are still in need of transfer out, the acting governor of Kursk, Alexei Smirnov, is reported to have said during a consultation with President Vladimir Putin.

Smirnov said 28 villages are in Ukrainian hands and the whereabouts of around 2,000 people are unclear.

"The situation in the region is difficult," said Smirnov to Putin, according to Russian news agencies.

The governor said that the Ukrainian army had advanced about 12 kilometres into Russian territory across a 40-kilometre front.

The governor's claims could not be verified. Smirnov was connected via video to Putin's residence near Moscow.

There have been complaints from citizens in the Kursk region over the past few days that the evacuation was poorly organised.
