Freelance Media Practitioners Welcome Socso Support

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Freelance media practitioners’ concerns regarding their welfare during field assignments have been addressed with contributions from the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SESSS).

Mohd Asri Saifuddin Mamat, 35, a freelance photographer for nearly 11 years, expressed relief over the government’s initiative.

“This job involves various risks, and this scheme is beneficial as it helps protect our livelihood,” said Mohd Asri, who has worked with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) for over six years.

Recalling an incident in 2017, Mohd Asri said he was involved in an accident while on assignment and was unable to work for nearly a month due to his injuries.

At that time, he did not have SOCSO coverage, which negatively impacted his income.

Mohd Asri was among the 10 freelance media practitioners who received contributions during the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between SOCSO and Bernama at Wisma Bernama today.

William Joseph, 60, a freelance cameraman at TV3, highlighted the precarious financial situation many freelancers face, leaving little time to consider personal insurance.

“Most of us live paycheck to paycheck, so this government initiative is a significant help,” said William, who started his career in 1985.

Muhammad Izzad Ezdanieal Roshaizad, 24, a freelance video cameraman at Astro Awani, also expressed his appreciation.

“This scheme provides a crucial safety net for media workers like me. It eases my concerns about unexpected incidents on duty,” said Muhammad, who has been in the media industry for two years.

The SESSS will benefit 493 freelance media practitioners from 45 media organisations nationwide, offering an annual contribution of RM232.80 per individual.
