BETONG, Aug 21 (Bernama) --  Perlis weightlifter Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin broke the national record in the men's 81kg category eight times en route to winning the gold medal in the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) at the Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan Sports Hall here today.

The 21-year-old lifter got the ball rolling in the snatch event, lifting 141 kilogrammes (kg) to break the national record of 140kg set by Nasir Roslan at the 2021 National Weightlifting Championships.

Hafizuddin continued his momentum by breaking his own record with lifts of 146kg and 151kg in the second and third attempts of the snatch event.

In the clean and jerk event, Hafizuddin's first lift of 165kg was enough for him break the total lift record of 316kg in the 81kg category, eclipsing the previous mark of 315kg also held by Nasir.

Hafizuddin was not done yet as he went on to break the clean and jerk and total lift records again with his second attempt of 176kg and third attempt of 181kg to dominate the podium with a total lift of 332kg.

“I’ve been wanting to break the national record in this event (men's 81kg) since 2022 when I lost at SUKMA KL. After that, I just wanted to break all the records in this edition.

"Alhamdulillah, today I proved that I am capable of breaking all the previous records for Perlis to win gold," Hafizuddin said.

Terengganu’s Muhammad Shah Jeh’an Syamsul Bahri took silver with a total lift of 273kg, while Federal Territories' Muhammad Elvin Muhammad Hidayat took the bronze with a total lift of 249kg.

In the men's 73kg category, Selangor lifter Noor Hirzie Fariez Mustafa took home the gold medal with a total lift of 270kg, having finished empty-handed in the last edition.

Sharon Jastine Silas of Sabah won silver with a total lift of 251kg, while Johor's Muhammad Afiq Lili Razak completed the podium, trailing by just 1kg.

In the women's 59kg category, Perlis lifter Nurul Aisyah Athirah Mohd Nadzim dominated the event with a total lift of 170kg, while Melaka's Nurul Syasya Khairina Samsur took silver with a total lift of 162kg, and Noorshahida Mohamad Saiffol Aza won bronze with a lift of 145kg.
