SUKMA 2024: Top Guns Cheah, Gan End Shooting Competition In Seventh Heaven

KUCHING, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Sharp-shooters Cheah Zen Hong of Pahang and Gan Chen Jie of Negeri Sembilan are dead-even with seven gold medals each as the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) shooting competition came to an end at the Sarawak Shooting Range today.

The duo gunned down a gold medal each today be among the highest gold medallists at SUKMA 2024, so far.

In today’s 10-metre (m) Air Pistol mixed team event, Cheah partnered Wan Nur Afiqah Wan Mohd Haneef to defeat Pahang’s Muhammad Zainal 'Azim Ahmad Mahmud-Damia Hani Mohamad Sakran 14-6 for the gold medal.

The 18-year-old Cheah hopes that he will be roped into the national elite squad so that he can compete at the highest level and achieve his dream of becoming an Olympian.

“I wanted to win the gold medal for Pahang. We’ve worked hard and, thankfully, our mission has been accomplished. I also hope that with today result, I will be considered for the 2024 SEA Games.

“I also want to be like (national Olympian) Jonathan Wong and dream of combining with him one day… I still need to gain more experience,” he said.

Home partnership Justin Joannes-Siti Nur Anniesa Mohd Danial Fikri defeated Federal Territories’ Abdul Haiqal Abdul Aziz-Dania Irdina Zaini 17-11 for bronze.

Not to be outdone, Gan also bagged her seventh gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle mixed team event, partnering Amar Syawal Abdul Mutalib to defeat Pahang’s Hairiz Haiqal Ramlan-Nabila Aisya Rahman Abdullah 16-12.

Negeri Sembilan also took the bronze through the partnership of Mohd Ridzuan Muhammad Azman-Tan Yee Xuan, who defeated Perlis’ Muhammad Ariff Naim-Nur Aina Sofea Aziz 16-12.

Gan, 20, described her final outing in the biennial Games, which she has competed in for the past five years, as “very meaningful”.

“Thank you all Negeri Sembilan shooters who have always supported and helped lift my spirit in the final just now. I never expected to win seven gold medals here. (My partner) Amar Syawal shot well today, he fought till the last shot,” she said.

Pahang retained the overall title with 11 gold medals, three silvers and four bronzes while Negeri Sembilan also bagged 11 gold medals, three silvers and three bronzes.
