SUKMA 2024: Penang Boxers Rule The Ring With Four-Gold Blitz

SRI AMAN, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Penang's boxing team showcased their dominance at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 by bagging four gold medals with a standout performance here today. 

In the finals held at the Sri Aman Sports Complex Indoor Stadium here, R Pavithran clinched the first gold for Penang by defeating Selangor's Muhammad Irfan Haikal Mohd Fazli 5-0 in the Flyweight (48 kg - 51 kg) division. 

In the Light Heavyweight (75 kg - 80 kg) category, Muhammad Syafiq Qusyairy Shahmizan added another gold for Penang, with a 4-1 win over Terengganu’s Muhammad Azrul Ezad  Zolkfli.

 Muhammad Syafiq’s win inspired teammate Danaraj Anantha Selvam, who powered his way through to a  5-0 victory over Melaka boxer Sharvin Varma Raj Palaniapan in the men’s 86 kg and above division to secure Penang’s third gold.

Penang’s outstanding night was completed by T Sharmela, who clinched the gold in the women’s Flyweight (48 kg - 52 kg) category with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Sarawak’s Clavia Charlene Sudang Kenedy.

In another final bout, Sarawak added another gold to their medal tally through Frederick Xian Bartholomew Albern in the men’s Featherweight (54 kg - 57 kg) with a 5-0 win over Sabah’s Joel Evekly Jain.

Johor and Perak also earned gold medals on the final day of boxing events at SUKMA 2024.

Johor's Azib Zafran Zolkarnain won in the Light Middleweight (67 kg - 71 kg) category with a 5-0 victory over Sabah's Jonathan John, while Perak's Syed Muhammad Hanafi Syed Affindi secured gold in the Light Welterweight (60 kg - 63.5 kg) division.
