UN Chief 'deeply Concerned' After Hezbollah, Israel Exchange Intense Cross-border Fire

WASHINGTON, Aug 26 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the intense overnight exchange of cross-border fire between Israel and Hezbollah, according to a statement from his spokesperson on Sunday.

"These actions endanger both the Lebanese and Israeli populations and pose a threat to regional security and stability. The Secretary-General urges immediate de-escalation and calls on the parties to urgently and fully implement Resolution 1701 (2006) and return to a cessation of hostilities," said Stephane Dujarric.

Hezbollah fighters reportedly fired over 320 rockets at military targets in Israel, the Lebanese movement said in a statement on Sunday.

Earlier, Hezbollah announced the launch of the attack in retaliation for an Israeli strike in the southern suburbs of Beirut, which resulted in the death of senior commander Fuad Shukr.

This escalation occurs amid an ongoing and intense Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of over 40,300 Palestinians since a Hamas attack on Oct 7.
