MOSCOW, Aug. 26 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- London's Metropolitan Police said on Sunday they had arrested 90 people on the first day of the Caribbean carnival in the city's Notting Hill district, which runs Sunday and Monday, reported Sputnik.
Fifteen officers were injured on the first day of the carnival, but none of them were seriously injured, the police said on X.
"90 arrests have been made so far," it said.
According to the statement, the majority of the arrests, 18 cases, were for possession of offensive weapons, and another 10 people were arrested for attacks on emergency services workers. The police noted that three cases of knife attacks had been recorded during the carnival.
"We're aware of three stabbings. A 32-year-old woman is in hospital in a life threatening condition, a 29-year-old man is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries and we await an update on the condition of a 24-year-old man," the police statement says.
The annual Caribbean Carnival has been held on the last Monday of August and the Sunday before it in London's Notting Hill district since 1966. One of the ideas behind the carnival was originally to unite the multi-ethnic community and put an end to racial conflicts, but the carnival has a reputation for crime, drug use, piles of rubbish, and an increased noise level that disturbs local residents.
