KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's 36-year wait for the Sepak Takraw team to win the King’s Cup in the team regu event came to an end today as they were defeated by hosts Thailand with a score of 0-2.

According to records, the last time Malaysia's Sepak Takraw team won the King’s Cup was in 1988 under the leadership of Haris Abdul Rahman.

In the final held in Nakhon Ratchasima today, the first regu team comprising Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam (server), Mohamad Azlan Alias (killer) and Farhan Adam (feeder) were forced to play three sets before losing 15-4, 3-15, 11-15.

The hopes pinned on the second regu team of Zarif Marican Ibrahim Marican (server), Muhammad Shahalril Aiman Halim (killer), and Aidil Aiman Azwawi (feeder) to keep the chance of a third match alive were also dashed as they lost 13-15, 9-15.

On Monday, Malaysia's Sepak Takraw team clinched gold in the men's regu event at the King’s Cup 2024 after defeating India 2-0.
