SINGAPORE, Sept 16 (Bernama) -- The High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore recently hosted a reception to commemorate National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM), attended by 600 distinguished guests from the diplomatic corps, Singaporean government officials, and the Malaysian diaspora.

The reception, held at a hotel last Friday, showcased a rich array of Malaysian culture and cuisine.

Guests were treated to captivating silat and cultural dance performances, while the culinary offerings included a selection of Malaysian delicacies such as sate, roti canai, bihun sup, and an assortment of local fruits and desserts.

The Guest of Honour for the evening was Singapore’s Minister for National Development and Minister-in-charge of Social Services Integration Desmond Lee, who represented the Singaporean government.

The event was also graced by Singaporean Members of Parliament Don Wee and Liang Eng Hwa, as well as Opposition Leader Pritam Singh.

In his address, Malaysia High Commissioner to Singapore Datuk Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, elaborated on the theme of HKHM, “Malaysia MADANI: Jiwa Merdeka,” and highlighted the longstanding, deep-rooted, and comprehensive relationship between Malaysia and Singapore.

“MADANI, which stands for a civilised society, envisions a nation grounded in mutual respect and integrity while pursuing balanced economic development, social equity, and environmental sustainability.

“It is through these lenses that Malaysia views its relationship with Singapore, not just as two nations side by side, but as partners working toward a shared future and for the region as a whole,” he said.

Azfar also reminded Malaysians in Singapore to uphold Malaysia’s image and good name, and to follow and respect the laws and rules of their host country.

“May Malaysians in Singapore always bring honour to Malaysia and help each other,” he added.

Meanwhile, Lee commended the efforts by both governments to deepen existing cooperation, including initiatives like the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). He also expressed anticipation for the completion of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link).

He emphasised that Singapore would work closely with its Malaysian counterparts to ensure that their cooperation remain on track, while continuing to address bilateral issues in a sensitive and constructive manner.

Lee also reiterated Singapore’s support and confidence in Malaysia’s successful chairmanship of ASEAN next year.

“Malaysia can count on our support to deliver a successful ASEAN Chairmanship,” he said.
