KOTA SAMARAHAN, Sept 16 (Bernama) -- Two disaster supplies storage depots to cater for impending disasters will be built in Sarawak, namely in Sibu and Miri, said Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said her ministry is in the midst of finalising suitable locations for the depots to meet the needs of disaster victims in the affected areas.

"For instance in Sibu, we need to find the most suitable location as floods often happen in Sibu, so too in Miri, so we need to find a place where flooding does not occur...only after that can we proceed with the tender process," she told reporters after the launch of the KASIH KPWKM Kembara Convoy programme at the Disaster Needs Storage Depot in Samarahan today.

"For now, we use mini depots in Miri and Sibu, even though they are not sufficient (in capacity) but what is important is that there are always supplies.”

Nancy said that apart from this, the KPWKM is also planning to build mini depots in other parts of Sarawak due to the current unpredictable weather conditions.

According to her, the Disaster Needs Storage Depot, in Samarahan, which houses various essential equipment such as tents, pillows and wheelchairs, is capable of providing assistance to 30,000 victims across the southern region of Sarawak, including Serian, Kuching and Samarahan.

The KASIH KPWKM Kembara Convoy 2024, involving 40 vehicles and four KPWKM assets, will travel across eight Sarawak districts namely Kuching, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Sibuti, Miri, Limbang and Lawas.

Various programmes as well as free services will be offered by agencies under the KPWKM for the duration of the tour which began yesterday and ends on Sunday (Sept 22).
