Over 7,000 Postmen, Courier Workers Spirited To Continue Contributing To Pos Malaysia - UPUS

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- The Union of Pos Malaysia Berhad Uniformed Staff Peninsular Malaysia (UPUS) president Ismail Ali has expressed relief with Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil’s statement regarding the jobs of postmen.

"Despite the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the Minister has given an assurance that Pos Malaysia Bhd postmen will not be laid off despite the adoption of AI technology in its services and will remain relevant in this country,” he said in a statement today.

He said this (assurance) has certainly given the spirit to the 7,204 postmen and courier workers to continue contributing to Pos Malaysia and the country as a vehicle for conveying both good and bad news to the people.

Yesterday, Fahmi in his speech for the World Post Day 2024 celebrations suggested that all delivery and logistics companies take advantage of technology such as electric vehicles (EV) and AI to improve customer service and the effectiveness of their operations.

He also emphasised that AI is unlikely to replace human labour but will only change the scope and type of work.

At the same time, Ismail said his team welcomes the efforts of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) which has appointed a panel of consultants to examine the propriety of amending the Postal Services Act 2012.

He said the time has come for the Act to be reviewed after a period of 12 years.

Meanwhile, Fahmi was reported to have said that his ministry and MCMC are committed in ensuring the postal and courier services undergo transformation in line with the development of the times, in addition to emphasising the importance of improving customer service and resolving issues faced by users immediately.
