NIBONG TEBAL, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The Sanglang Flood Mitigation Project (Phase 1) is believed to be able to control and reduce the flood problems faced by residents in several residential areas around the Sanglang Pump House here, which has been going on for a long time.

State Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said the project costing RM10.8 million under the state development allocation had already started on Oct 3 and will take two years to complete in October, 2026.

He said the project involved 10 components including the construction of a pump house with twin screw pumps with a capacity of 2,500 litres per second, the construction of a retaining wall, construction of a new road and the maintenance of the existing road at the TNB sub station.

"The request to implement this project was made more than a year ago to upgrade not only the Sanglang Pump House but also the Nibong Tebal Pump House.

"We understand that this project is not 100 percent able to solve the flood problem, but at least we can control and reduce the risk of flooding in the Sanglang area, especially in Taman Veerapan, Kampung Stesyen and Taman Penting," he said. at a press conference after visiting the Sanglang Pump House here, today which was also attended by Penang Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) deputy director 1 Ahmad Kamil Jamaludin.

Commenting further, H'ng, who is also Jawi assemblyman, said that when completed, the project will be able to reduce the flood area to 1.4 hectares by reducing the flood depth below 0.6m in addition to reducing the area of the flood area to 0.5 per cent.

He said the flooding in Sanglang was caused by the capacity of the drainage system which was unable to accommodate the surface flow from the upstream area plus its low position causing the area to be flooded.
