U-Turn Project In Melaka To Reduce Traffic Congestion By Up To 50 Per Cent

MELAKA, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- The issue of traffic congestion is expected to be reduced by up to 50 per cent through the construction of an elevated U-turn and direct U-turn from the Pulau Gadong Intersection to the Cheng Perdana Intersection.

State Public Works, Infrastructure, Public Amenities, and Transport Committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the project’s approval was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2025 last Friday.

“The construction will involve the main route on the Lebuh Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ), which has the highest volume of vehicles, especially during peak hours when people are commuting to and from work.

“Once the elevated U-turn and direct U-turn are in place, there will be no more traffic lights requiring vehicles to stop at any given time, which will prevent congestion,” he said after appearing as a guest in the radio programme ‘Apa Khabau YB’ produced by MelakaFM here today.

Commenting further, Hameed said the state government had previously implemented a 'no right turn' initiative to facilitate smoother traffic flow, especially during peak hours; however, the construction of the elevated U-turn and direct U-turn is seen as more effective.

He added that the state government had previously requested the construction of four elevated U-turn and direct U-turn projects across Melaka.

“Therefore, JKR (Public Works Department), as the responsible agency, will continue to submit applications to the federal government for the approval of three similar projects at the Lebuh Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Ayer Keroh (SPA), Lebuh Ayer Keroh, and Lebuh AMJ,” he said.
