KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- The Upholding the Malay Language and Strengthening Command of English (MBMMBI) 2024 Carnival, which kicked off today, aims to ensure both the Malay and English languages progress in tandem.
Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia (IPGM) rector Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said MBMMBI 2024 reflects a holistic transformation in the national education system to nurture future generations capable of competing internationally.
He said the two-day carnival features interactive programmes and value-added activities in Malay or English, individually or in groups, at IPGM campuses and the English Language Teaching Centres (ELTC).
He added that the carnival focuses on language teaching and learning activities in the classroom and incorporates co-academic activities such as carnivals, exhibitions and various language-based competitions to enhance communication and interpersonal skills.
“The emphasis on ‘Sahabat Bahasa’ is the core of the MBMMBI programme. IPGM fosters the concept of peer mentoring as a method to enhance language proficiency for IPGM staff, particularly for students.
“The ‘Sahabat Bahasa’ concept is promoted and popularised in Teaching Schools at 27 IPGM campuses across Malaysia. The implementation method includes empowering Malay and English language activities or programmes both inside and outside the classroom,” he said in a press conference after officiating the carnival at the IPG Malay Language Campus here today.
Mohd Azam said the MBMMBI policy is not only for students but for all Malaysians, and it aims to nurture fluency and bilingualism among more young people.
At the carnival, IPGM also organises traditional games, language games, and other language activities through exhibitions and competitions for visitors, particularly schoolchildren.
“What’s special about this carnival is that IPGM brings language activities from all over Malaysia. We also showcase the proper use of Malay and English, despite participants coming from various ethnicities and cultures, in line with the theme of the carnival, which is the ‘Seni Berbahasa Wahana Perpaduan MADANI,” he added.
