Malaysia’s Michelle Chew Elected Chair Of IFRC Youth Commission

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Michelle Shi Jie Chew, Chairperson of the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) National Youth Council, has been elected as the new Chair of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Youth Commission during the 24th IFRC General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday.

MRC secretary-general Hakim Hamzah said the assembly, which involves 191 countries, saw Malaysia’s representative securing 41 per cent of the votes, triumphing against four other candidates to lead the IFRC Youth Commission.

“This election amplifies the voice of Malaysia’s youth and women in addressing global humanitarian challenges.

“Michelle Chew symbolises the active role of women in promoting gender equality in leadership, in line with the values of MRC and IFRC that prioritise inclusive participation,” he said in a statement today.

Hakim said that MRC hopes this recognition would inspire more women to engage in humanitarian initiatives and showcase their ability to bring about positive changes in society.

In addition, he said the involvement of the MRC National Chairperson Tengku Temenggong Kedah Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim as a member of the IFRC Board highlights Malaysia’s commitment to cultivating women leaders on the global stage.

He affirmed that MRC would continue to ensure women are given equal opportunities to lead and contribute locally and internationally as part of its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and prosperous community.
