Emphasis Should Be Given To Radiation Safety In Workplace - Nuklear Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Leadership in radiation safety management has been given significant emphasis to ensure compliance with the Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984 (Act 304), according to the Malaysian Nuclear Agency (Nuklear Malaysia).

Therefore, the agency has organised an Awareness Seminar on Radiation Safety for Person Responsible for the Licence (OBTL), emphasising the critical role of OBTL in ensuring radiation safety in the workplace.

Nuklear Malaysia director-general Dr Rosli Darmawan stated that the role of OBTL was crucial in ensuring that radiation safety practices within the organisation complied with the stringent standards outlined in Act 304.

“Act 304 is not just a set of guidelines; it serves as the primary framework regulating the use of atomic energy and radioactive materials in Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

According to the statement, compliance with Act 304 was mandatory and should not be compromised, as it was crucial for reducing radiation risks, ensuring public health, and protecting the environment from uncontrolled radiation.

Rosli also said that the seminar highlighted the importance of ionising radiation technology and its applications across various sectors, including agriculture, medicine, industry, manufacturing, research, and environmental protection.

He said that although this technology provided a competitive advantage to the country, the radiation safety aspect should be improved.

“This seminar serves as a crucial platform for sharing knowledge and experiences on radiation safety management, best practices in the workplace, and fostering a safe working environment for OBTL, radiation workers, and the community,” he added.

Rosli stated that leadership in this field required not only technical skills but also effective management strategies for radiation safety protection.

“Strong cooperation and ongoing commitment from all parties are crucial for establishing good nuclear leadership,” he said, adding that a solid safety culture was key to successful radiation management in Malaysia.
