Sarawak To Implement CCUS Initiative After Carbon Trading Bill Is Approved

KUCHING, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- Sarawak will undertake a cross-border Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) transportation initiative as soon as the Carbon Trading Bill is passed in the Dewan Rakyat, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Bill, expected to be tabled in December, will outline the federal government’s authority over cross-border CCUS transportation in Sarawak, among other things.

However, the state government will retain regulatory control over the management of the CCUS.

“If the carbon is brought to Sarawak, somebody has got to transport it, and the federal government will have to look into this based on the international convention.

“But when it is stored in Sarawak, then it has to comply with our state law,” he said to reporters when met at the Deepavali open house event hosted by the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president, Datuk Dr. Kalwinder Singh Khaira here, today.

Yesterday, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli held a meeting with Abang Johari and Sarawak state cabinet ministers to discuss the upcoming Carbon Trading Bill.

The Sarawak Premier had reportedly said that the state government will work with the federal government on cross-border CCUS transportation while overseeing its management independently within the state’s authority.

According to him, offshore carbon storage in Sarawak will be managed by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), the state-owned oil and gas company.
