PETALING JAYA, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- SIRIM Bhd has been recognised for its capability to lead the development of green steel standards and certification, establishing the global standard for sustainably manufactured net-zero steel, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).
MITI deputy secretary general (investment and management) Datuk Bahria Mohd Tamil said this will herald the beginning of a new green steel revolution.
“Investing in green technology-based products not only corresponds with global sustainability goals but also capitalises on a rapidly rising demand for environmentally friendly solutions,” she said during the Majlis SIRIM Industri (MSI) 2024 dinner today.
Bahria highlighted that the government is committed to transforming the manufacturing industry to new heights by capitalising on emerging global trends, which are related to the steel industry.
“Due to the nature of its operations, the steel industry greatly increases Malaysia’s carbon emissions, making the country and world more vulnerable to climate change.
“In this regard, MITI is working hand-in-hand with our stakeholders to formulate the Green Transition Roadmap for the Iron and Steel Industry, which will be aligned to the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030),” she added.
Meanwhile, SIRIM launched its “SIRIM ESG Holistic Ecosystem” today, a forward-thinking initiative designed to support and accelerate environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices among Malaysian industries.
The ecosystem is positioned to empower businesses to meet sustainability goals and contribute meaningfully to both national and global environmental objectives.
The SIRIM ESG Holistic Ecosystem provides Malaysian companies with a comprehensive suite of ESG support services through SIRIM’s subsidiaries and business units, namely SIRIM QAS International, SIRIM Academy, and SIRIM IR.
