JERTIH, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- A total of 175 villages in Terengganu participating in the Sejahtera Komuniti MADANI (SejaTi MADANI) programme have ventured into hybrid tilapia farming in canvas fish ponds, opening new opportunities to boost local economies.
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu Holding (UMTH) Group chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ahmad Ramzi Mohamad Zubir said UMTH had been appointed as the implementing agency for the tilapia fish farming project, overseeing it from the start until the first season’s harvest.
“The tilapia fish farming project in canvas fish ponds utilises UMT’s Rapid Biofloc technology. Biofloc is a farming method that enhances water quality by adding probiotics and increasing the nitrogen-to-carbon ratio in the water.
“Through this method, biofloc water can be formed in just ten days, compared to the conventional process that takes 30 days,” he said after the Tilapia fish fry release ceremony at Kampung Gong Mak Som here today.
Ahmad Ramzi said that the technology could reduce livestock feed costs by up to 30 per cent, while also preventing the fish from having an earthy or fishy smell due to the improved water quality from natural processes.
According to him, the tilapia fish farming project in Kampung Gong Mak Som was carried out by the Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JPKKP) at a cost of RM98,000, with 12,000 fish fry released into three specially designed canvas ponds.
“The fish will be marketed after six months of rearing in the canvas ponds and will be sold through two agencies, namely the Terengganu Fishermen’s Association (Penentu) and the Sabasun supermarket chain, with an expected revenue of RM40,000.
“UMTH will monitor the project until the harvest phase, and this includes the 35 villages in Besut district participating in the tilapia fish farming project,” he said.
Inspired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the implementation of the SejaTi MADANI programme aims to empower communities through socioeconomic development activities in villages across the country.
