BANGKOK, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- As Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim marks his second year as Malaysia's Prime Minister on Nov 24, it signifies not only a personal triumph after decades of political struggle but also a new chapter for the nation in strengthening regional relations.

Academicians and geostrategists from Thailand concur that Anwar, known for his reformist ideals, intellectual depth, and eloquence, has quickly positioned himself as a leader focused on revitalising Malaysia’s regional influence and fostering closer ties with Southeast Asian neighbours.

Assistant Professor Dr Yasmin Sattar from the Faculty of Political Science, Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus, highlighted Anwar’s unique ability to work across diverse groups, particularly in advancing humanitarian initiatives within the Muslim world.

She said Anwar is a seasoned statesman capable of injecting fresh energy into regional diplomacy.

"For instance, in the context of Thailand’s Deep South, he has historically advocated for development and cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia," she told Bernama recently.

Since 2004, Malaysia has played a critical and nuanced role as a facilitator in Thailand’s Deep South peace process.

The region, encompassing the provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and parts of Songkhla, has experienced decades of insurgency fuelled by demands for greater autonomy and cultural rights from the predominantly Malay-Muslim population.

However, Yasmin expressed optimism that Malaysia’s facilitation role would gain more clarity and momentum, particularly with Malaysia set to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025.

"There are higher expectations this time, as Anwar has a longstanding track record in humanitarian work. As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia will likely allocate additional resources to support regional peace initiatives," she said.

Her colleague, Professor Dr Ibrahim Narongraksakhet, highlighted Anwar’s strong connections with the Islamic community in Southern Thailand, where he is highly respected.

"The local population has high hopes that the ongoing conflicts will see progress towards resolution during his tenure," Ibrahim said.

He also noted that diplomatic relations between Thailand and Malaysia have remained strong under previous Prime Ministers, including Srettha Thavisin, and continue to flourish under the current administration led by Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

"Malaysia's role as ASEAN Chair will be crucial. If Malaysia, under Anwar’s leadership, fails to act, it would be a missed opportunity. Anwar is well-known in Southern Thailand and enjoys goodwill there," he added.

Ibrahim further highlighted Anwar’s extensive network across the region, including strong ties with leaders in Brunei, Turkiye, and Indonesia, which could accelerate peace efforts in Southern Thailand.

Anwar recently concluded an 11-day tour of Saudi Arabia, Peru, and Brazil, which began on November 9, showcasing Malaysia’s confident yet humble stride on the global stage.

During the tour, Anwar engaged in official discussions with leaders from 19 countries, strengthening global partnerships and exploring new opportunities to enhance Malaysia’s prosperity amid a challenging geopolitical landscape.

At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Anwar also shared lighter moments with ASEAN leaders, including Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto, Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, reaffirming Malaysia’s active role within ASEAN.
