KOTA KINABALU, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have joined forces to transform Kota Kinabalu into a smart, sustainable, and progressive city.

Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr. Sabin Samitah and MCMC Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, witnessed by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Speaking at the event, Hajiji described the collaboration as a significant step towards achieving Sabah's vision of sustainable development through digitalisation.

The MoU will facilitate large-scale projects, such as enhancing digital connectivity, improving public safety with smart infrastructure like closed-circuit cameras, and digitising administrative systems and services.

"This initiative will also benefit Sabah by establishing Kota Kinabalu as a hub for digital innovation, and creating opportunities for collaboration across the tourism, education, and business sectors," he said.

"It will attract significant foreign investment, create job opportunities, and enhance the quality of life for residents. Kota Kinabalu will serve as a model smart city, demonstrating how technology can empower lives and drive economic growth," he said.

Meanwhile, Fahmi highlighted that the collaboration will facilitate the development of a comprehensive smart city framework, improve digital infrastructure, expand access to communication technology, and implement digital education programmes to build a highly skilled workforce.

He noted that under the MoU, internet coverage will be enhanced across Kota Kinabalu to support Sabah's digital government services and to develop a communication infrastructure plan for agreed-upon development locations.

He added that MCMC will provide technical advisory services to DBKK in areas related to digital infrastructure, networking, coverage, cybersecurity, and online fraud prevention.

"The MoU also explores collaborations in e-commerce and ICT training at the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) in Kota Kinabalu, targeting community involvement in NADI areas," he said.
