BERNAMA-UNISZA COLLABORATION ENHANCES QUALITY OF INFORMATION DELIVERY

KUALA NERUS, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- The collaboration between the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UniSZA) through the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) Campus Tour programme is capable of enhancing the quality of information delivery to the public, particularly university students.

UniSZA vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Fadzli Adam said Bernama, as the sole news agency in Malaysia, consistently sets the best example in maintaining journalistic integrity, accuracy and professionalism.

He said the journalism industry is now facing numerous challenges, particularly with the rapid advancements in communication technology which has reshaped the global communication landscape.

"The spread of fake news is a major challenge, tarnishing the reputation of journalists and news organisations, especially on social media, where false and sensational information spreads easily.

"However, under the leadership of Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, many dynamic and proactive efforts have been made to strengthen the media and communication landscape, including through the HAWANA Campus Tour programme," he said in his speech at the HAWANA 2024 Campus Tour event held at UniSZA today.

The programme was officiated by Fahmi and attended by Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and the agency's editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2024 project director.

Commenting further, Fadzli said to ensure the quality and ethics of news delivery are upheld, UniSZA collaborates with the ministry and industry players such as Bernama to give exposure to students in an effort to create a society that is sensitive to good journalistic ethics.

He said UniSZA has developed various courses at its Faculty of Languages and Communication, including Mass Media Writing, Public Relations and Media Writing, Public Relations Law and Media Ethics, and Fundamentals of Journalism, all of which emphasise ethical news reporting.

"Various activities and collaborative projects between the university, faculty and industry have been planned with professional media practitioners. Here, students are trained and exposed to techniques for producing accurate news reports within specific timeframes," he added.

UniSZA also expressed gratitude to Bernama for selecting the university as the location for the final leg of HAWANA 2024 Campus Tour.

During the programme, Fahmi also presented high-performance computers and smart TV sets to UniSZA, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK). In addition, 82 UniSZA students affected by the recent flood received laptops to support their learning.
