SEPANG, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedow departed for home today after concluding a two-day official visit to Malaysia.

Berdimuhamedow was given a red carpet ceremonial send-off and a guard-of-honour by the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment (Ceremonial) at Bunga Raya Complex of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here.

His delegation boarded a Turkmenistan Airlines flight at 5.30 pm.

They were sent off by Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who was the minister in attendance for Berdimuhamedow's visit.

Berdimuhamedow, who was making his maiden visit to Malaysia after assuming office, held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier today.

During their talks, Malaysia and Turkmenistan agreed to bolster ties and explore the full economic potential of the two countries based on the principle of equality and mutual benefits.

This includes sectors like oil and gas, energy, trade, tourism, higher education, high technologies and capacity building.

The visit also resulted in the signing of several agreements which will pave the way for deeper collaboration across various fields.

Trade between the two countries has experienced strong growth, with total trade from January to October 2024 soaring by 74.8 per cent to RM63.28 million from RM36.19 million in the same period last year.

In 2023, Turkmenistan was Malaysia’s fourth-largest trading partner among Central Asian countries, with total trade worth RM48.62 million.

Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Turkmenistan were officially established in 1992.
