JAKARTA, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- Indonesian police and military forces have launched large-scale patrols in Yalimo, Papua, following a shooting incident that left two civilians dead last Wednesday.

The patrols, which began on Friday, are aimed at stabilising security in the region, with authorities also seeking public assistance to track down those responsible.

The operation, led by Yalimo Police Chief Commissioner Joni Samonsabra, is part of the joint police and military task force, Operation Damai Cartenz.

“It is not just patrols, we are actively pursuing the perpetrators of the shooting,” he said in a statement on Monday.

The taskforce is also tightening security in Yalimo, including vehicle inspections at key entry and exit points, to prevent similar incidents.

“We strongly condemn these recurring shootings and are committed to restoring peace in Yalimo by collaborating with all elements of society,” he added.

Operation Damai Cartenz head Brigadier-General Police Faizal Ramadhani confirmed that two woodcutters were killed in an attack by the armed criminal group led by Aske Mabel.

Their bodies were evacuated on Thursday, he noted in a separate statement.
