JAKARTA, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Three Indonesian migrant workers were intercepted by immigration officers in Nunukan, North Kalimantan while attempting to enter Malaysia illegally.

The individuals, aged between 22 and 42, from East Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, were detained at Dapiton Pier, a border crossing point in the Lumbis sub-district, near the border with Sabah, Malaysia.

In a statement on Thursday, the Nunukan Immigration Office said the three workers admitted they planned to work in Malaysia as oil palm farmers without proper documents.

Its head Adrian Soetrisno stated that the workers were prevented from leaving in order to protect them from the risks of exploitation and legal violations abroad.

“We are committed to strengthening surveillance at the border, particularly against illegal activities that could harm the nation and its citizens,” he said.

He also reiterated that protecting migrant workers is a top priority, urging its citizens to adhere to official procedures when seeking employment abroad.
