LANGKAWI, Jan 17 (Bernama) -- Crystal glass eagle sculptures and batik chokers are set to be special souvenirs for delegates attending the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM) here this weekend.
The distinctive art pieces, which highlight local characteristics and unique craftsmanship, were created by local artisans Kamarul Faizy Roslan and Nor Ashikin Nor Majid.
Kamarul Faizy, 54, who runs a crystal glass-blowing workshop in Langkawi, expressed his excitement and pride at being chosen to craft the mementoes, calling it a rare and valuable opportunity.
Despite facing challenges in completing the crystal eagle sculptures, including time constraints, Kamarul was elated to see the project through.
“Given the scale of the ASEAN event, the client understandably requested something exceptional, not simple. We made several attempts to perfect it. Ideally, we would need three months to complete all the souvenirs, but we had to manage it within a month.
“Thankfully, we overcame the obstacles and delivered. From this experience, we learned our limits and proved how far we can go. Without challenges and motivation, we wouldn’t achieve such quality products,” he said when met here today.
He hopes the crystal eagle, a symbol of Langkawi, will help promote the island as a tourist destination while showcasing its array of handicraft products to the ASEAN delegates.
Meanwhile, accessories artisan Nor Ashikin was tasked with creating batik chokers as souvenirs for the spouses of the ASEAN delegates attending the retreat.
Each choker, made from batik sourced from various Malaysian states, was customised to suit the personality and characteristics of each delegate's spouse.
“We spent considerable time studying their individual traits and personalities to ensure the chokers were tailored to them.
“Batik was chosen as the theme to promote Malaysia’s uniquely beautiful batik. These chokers not only highlight Langkawi’s craft industry but also represent that of Malaysia,” she said.
Nor Ashikin, who crafts handmade choker necklaces and soft bracelets under the brand Ash Majid with her husband Meor Ezammer Meor Ahmad Sukarno, hopes her creations will serve as cherished mementoes for the ASEAN spouses.
Langkawi Craft Complex Director Farina Darus shared her pride in the selection of two Langkawi artisans to create the souvenirs for the ASEAN delegates.
“These locally inspired souvenirs showcase Langkawi and Malaysia as tourism destinations with exceptional craft products.
“When craft entrepreneurs design their products, they embody the identity of the region through motifs and the uniqueness of the craft itself,” she said.
