PETALING JAYA, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- Police recorded 7,882 road accident cases nationwide during Op Selamat 23 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations from Jan 28 to Feb 2, a 10 per cent decrease compared to 8,784 cases in Op Selamat 21 last year.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the number of fatal accidents dropped to 64 cases from 104, while 66 deaths were recorded compared to 117 during the same festive period last year.

"Motorcyclists and pillion riders remain the highest casualties, accounting for 47 fatalities," he said at the Op Selamat 23 Appreciation Ceremony in conjunction with Chinese New Year here today.

He said a total of 124,286 summonses were issued during Op Selamat 23, compared to 183,033 in Op Selamat 21.

Razarudin noted a significant increase in nationwide traffic volume during Op Selamat 23, likely due to the number of registered vehicles, which stood at 36.6 million as of January this year.

He said the surge was also believed to be influenced by people taking advantage of the 50 per cent toll discount offered during the Chinese New Year period.

Besides that, he said house burglary cases also declined, with 202 cases recorded this year compared to 265 last year.
