Emergency Pipe Repair To Cause Water Supply Disruption In Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- Residents in Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas are advised to prepare for potential water disruptions due to an emergency partial shutdown scheduled this Friday (Feb 7) starting at 2 pm.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said the shutdown was necessary to repair a leak detected at a pipe located in front of Skyline SIB, Jalan Penampang here, which was expected to take about 12 hours to complete.

The State Public Works Minister said affected areas included Kota Kinabalu City Centre, Kepayan, Tanjung Lipat, Kolombong, Inanam, Luyang, Bukit Padang, Penampang, Kobusak, Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association Sabah (KDCA), and several other locations in the Penampang and Putatan districts.

“The leak was identified at the upstand washout pipe, suspected to be caused by lateral loading pressure from the washout chamber.

"The repair work will involve excavating the affected area, locating the precise point of leakage, and conducting necessary pipe repairs," he said in a statement here today.

During this period, he said the Moyog Water Treatment Plant would operate at a reduced capacity of 109 million litres per day (MLD) instead of the usual 187 MLD, marking a 41 per cent reduction in treated water production.

To mitigate the impact, Jabatan Air Negeri Sabah (JANS) will mobilise water tankers to supply affected areas. Residents are advised to store sufficient water and use it prudently until full supply is restored.
