PETRA Assures People's Welfare Will Be Considered In Setting Peninsula Electricity Tariffs

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) assured that electricity tariffs in Peninsular Malaysia, including the new tariff schedule under the Incentive Based Regulation mechanism for the Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), will consider the well-being of the people.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said any increase that can burden the rakyat is not allowed, in line with the instruction by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said his ministry through the Energy Commission had engaged with industry players and the business community on Jan 13 and Feb 5 on this matter.

"The ministry will refine the views given to be used as input for setting the new tariff schedule in the future so that all users, especially the industry, can be more prepared for the changes and use electricity more efficiently in the future," he said during a question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said this in response to a question from Datuk Abdul Khalib Abdullah (PN-Rompin) who inquired the rationale behind Tenaga Nasional Bhd's desire to raise electricity tariffs even though the closest neighbouring country has plans to the contrary.

In this regard, Fadillah stressed that any announcement regarding the fixing of electricity tariffs in Peninsular Malaysia will only be officially issued by the government.
