NEW DELHI, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- An earthquake of 4.0 magnitude jolted New Delhi and its surrounding areas on Monday morning, with people rushing out of their homes into the open in panic.
It struck at a depth of five kilometres at 5.36 am local time, with the epicentre being in New Delhi, India's National Centre for Seismology said on X.
The tremor jolted sleeping residents, with some saying it "felt like a wave."
The capital region has a population of more than 33 million.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked people to stay alert for possible aftershocks.
"Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation," he said.
There were no immediate reports of property damage or loss of life.
