Port Klang Targets 15 Mln TEUs In 2025 - Loke

KLANG, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- Port Klang is targeting 15 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container handling this year, representing a 2.3 per cent increase from 2024.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke attributed the target to positive domestic economic growth, ongoing infrastructure development, and cargo growth driven by the manufacturing and logistics sectors.

"The target is further supported by government policies that are increasingly trade-friendly, particularly in the logistics sector," he said at a press conference following the Port Klang Authority's Chinese New Year celebration and the launch of the Malaysia Maritime Single Window (MMSW) at the KSL Convention Centre today.

Loke noted that Port Klang handled 14.64 million TEUs last year, a 4.5 per cent increase from 2023, representing around 47.7 per cent of Malaysia's total container handling. 

"This is a historic achievement for Port Klang, the highest since it began container operations in 1973. I would like to congratulate the Port Klang Authority, as well as the Northport and Westports terminals, and all stakeholders in the logistics industry."

He emphasised that this success underscores Port Klang's continued role as a key regional logistics hub, bolstered by a strong global shipping network connecting major destinations.

Loke also highlighted that Port Klang's position in the World Container Port League is likely to rise to 10th place, though the official ranking will only be confirmed in a few months. 

"Other competitors, such as Rotterdam and Hong Kong, have reported lower container handling than Port Klang," he explained.

In addition to Port Klang's rise, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor is also expected to move up to 13th place, having handled 12.2 million TEUs in 2024.

Malaysia's total container handling volume reached 30.68 million TEUs last year, a rise of 8.6 per cent compared to 2023.

In other developments, Loke announced that the MMSW System has been expanded to ports nationwide, with full implementation at Port Klang scheduled for June 10, 2024.

From June 1 to Dec 31, 2024, the MMSW system processed 10,682 ships for all arrival and departure procedures at ports across Malaysia.

"This number will continue to grow as more private ports and jetties across the country become involved," Loke said.

"Feedback confirms that the MMSW system has significantly improved the efficiency of ship departure processes through digitalisation, while reducing workload and bureaucracy,” he added.

The Ministry of Transport plans to expand the MMSW system's scope in its second phase to include container management, including movement tracking and monitoring.
