MANAMA (Bahrain), Feb 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Bahrain highlights the strengthening of diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations as they celebrate 50 years of bilateral relations.

Bahrain’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Waleed Khalifa Al Manea, commended the strong ties between Bahrain and Malaysia, highlighting the significance of the Malaysian Prime Minister’s inaugural official visit.

He emphasised that the visit reflects the deep bonds of brotherhood and friendship between the two nations.

“This visit holds great historical significance, as it reflects the profound ties between Bahrain and Malaysia, which have now reached their fiftieth year since the establishment of diplomatic relations,” he told Bernama on Thursday.

Al Manea also highlighted the continuous progress and growth in various political, economic, cultural, and social fields under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Hamad Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia.

He added that the visit marked a historic occasion through which Bahrain and Malaysia reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their political and economic cooperation and partnership.

“Both countries expressed their commitment to elevating these ties to broader and more comprehensive horizons, ensuring prosperity for their nations and people, while also reinforcing their pivotal role in promoting security, peace, and sustainable development at regional and international levels,” he said.

The Bahraini Ambassador to Malaysia stressed that the discussions held by the Malaysian Prime Minister aimed to deepen cooperation between the two nations while exploring new opportunities to expand their partnership, enhance innovation, and address emerging global challenges.

“Both countries remain dedicated to building a more prosperous future, contributing to the stability and development of their nations, and looking forward to many more years of close and effective collaboration,” he said.

Anwar arrived early Wednesday morning for his first official visit to the Gulf nation as Prime Minister, at the invitation of Bahrain’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Salman Hamad Al Khalifa.

Bahrain, the first Gulf nation to discover oil in 1932, was Malaysia’s ninth-largest trading partner in West Asia last year, while Malaysia ranked as Bahrain’s third-largest trading partner among ASEAN countries and 18th globally in 2023.

Besides oil, Bahrain is home to the world’s fourth-largest aluminium processing plant, a key export to Malaysia.
