PUTRAJAYA, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), through the National Planetarium remains committed to raising public awareness of astronomy and space science through interactive learning and educational programmes.

In a statement today, MOSTI reaffirmed its dedication to advancing space science and astronomy, ensuring Malaysia stays at the forefront of this field for comprehensive and sustainable development.

"These efforts align with the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (NSTIP) 2021-2030, which emphasises the mastery of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Economy (STIE) and positions Malaysia as a leader in the ASEAN Space Economy," the statement read.

As part of this mission, the National Planetarium, in collaboration with Putrajaya Corporation and private firm GOLAAdventures Sdn Bhd, hosted the Astronomy Picnic, to mark the rare celestial phenomenon of planetary alignment.

This spectacular event, where seven planets align in a straight line across the night sky from west to east, began in early January 2025 and is expected to be visible until the end of March 2025.

The event was made even more special with a symbolic launch by MOSTI secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim, alongside MOSTI deputy secretary-general (Science Planning and Cultivation) Ruziah Shafei and National Planetarium director Mohd Zamri Shah Mastor.

The Astronomy Picnic drew an overwhelming crowd of over 1,500 visitors from across the country, some arriving as early as 3.00 pm to secure the best spots for an unforgettable night under the stars. The event stretched late into the night, concluding at 3.00 am.

Apart from stargazing, attendees were treated to a host of engaging activities, including an Astrophotography Exhibition, a "Sun Info" session, hands-on science experiments, astronomy talks, and guided solar and planetary observations conducted by observatories and astronomy enthusiasts from across Malaysia.

"The Astronomy Picnic is a collaborative effort to promote 'Astro Tourism' in Malaysia, offering an educational and family-friendly experience.

"We hope this strong partnership between the government and private sector will inspire greater interest in astronomy among the younger generation," the statement added.
