KPK Plans To Collaborate With ST, TNB To Integrate Palm Oil-Based RE Into National Grid

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 (Bernama) – The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) plans to collaborate with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and the Energy Commission of Malaysia (ST) to utilise palm oil-based renewable energy (RE) in expanding the country's energy grid connectivity.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, said the effort will require close collaboration with various stakeholders.

“This initiative also aligns with TNB’s long term investment strategy in sustainable energy infrastructure.  Furthermore, RE presents a significant opportunity for foreign direct investment (FDI), positioning Malaysia as an attractive destination for investors looking to support the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources,” he said in his keynote address at the 36th Palm and Lauric Oils Price Outlook Conference (POC 2025) today.

The minister said that although this transition cannot happen overnight, the government envisions the palm oil industry becoming a significant producer of RE in Malaysia.

“As the country gradually phases out coal-fired power plants in the coming years, palm oil has the potential to serve as an alternative energy source. For instance, within the next decade, all palm oil mills and refineries are expected to operate using RE. This shift not only promotes energy saving but also creates opportunities for excess energy to be sold to the grid,” he added.
