KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 (Bernama) -- The Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency’s (AKPK) GoGiggers 2024 financial literacy programme has proven to have helped Foodpanda delivery riders to manage their finances better, enabling them to save more and manage their finances better.

The agency said in a recent statement that participants showed a 34.4 per cent increase in their financial welfare while their financial knowledge rose by 13.1 per cent and there was a positive change in financial behaviour of 18.5 per cent.

Foodpanda and Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) were strategic partners for the programme, which managed to spur 74 per cent of participants to start their own emergency savings.

BSN reported that GIRO savings collected exceeded a total of RM68,000, while investments in Premium Savings Certificates exceeded RM40,000.

Besides saving, participants were also exposed to the importance of contributing voluntarily to the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organisation’s (PERKESO) protection schemes to ensure a more stable financial future.

A participant, Mohd Saiful Samion admitted that the programme had changed the way he managed his finances.

"Before signing up for the GoGiggers programme, I often had difficulty managing money. This programme opened my mind, taught me how to manage my money better.

“Alhamdulillah, now I have my emergency funds and I feel more confident about my future and that of my wife,” he said.

Meanwhile, AKPK Education and Outreach Division general manager Nor Fazleen Zakaria said the initiative greatly benefitted gig workers who often face challenges such as uncertain income, lack of savings and limited financial coverage.

“We view every gig worker as the backbone of the modern economy, working hard to ensure a better life for their families.

“Yet, like other workers in Malaysia who contribute to the national economy, they also face major challenges like uncertain income, insufficient savings and limited financial protections,” she said.

GoGiggers 2024 managed to attract over 100 Foodpanda riders since it was launched on Sept 6, 2024.

The programme is aimed at empowering the gig community with more effective financial management skills.
