Selangor Govt Plans Centralised Pig Farming In Bukit Tagar

SHAH ALAM, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- The Selangor state government has decided to implement centralisation of the modern pig farming industry in Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor as a long-term strategic step in restructuring the industry, starting in 2030.

State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said this move is to ensure the pig farming industry is managed cleanly, systematically and modernly, while also not causing harm to the environment or the harmony of the local community, and ensuring food safety for the non-Muslim community.

“This decision was made after considering the needs of pollution control, epidemic management, and sustainable industrial development planning, in line with the state government's efforts to give serious attention to food safety issues, including the needs of non-Muslim friends.

"We want to ensure this industry is well-managed to guarantee food supply, hygiene, community harmony and disease risk control," he said at a press conference at the Selangor State Secretariat Building (SUK) here today.

According to Izham, Bukit Tagar has been identified as a suitable location, involving an area of about 202 hectares, including a buffer zone, with the implementation of a closed farming system and zero-emission concept.

He also said that while the project in Bukit Tagar is being completed, the state government is allowing existing farmers on 112 farms in Tanjung Sepat to continue operating at their respective locations for a period of three years before being relocated.

"To ensure the supply of pork, the state government has also allowed the entry of approximately 2,000 live pigs from Sarawak and Perak since July, subject to strict standard operating procedures," he added.
