MBPP Takes Serious View Of Tanjong Tokong Bridge Vandalism

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 9 (Bernama) -- The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) takes a serious view of vandalism on the pedestrian overhead bridge at the Tanjong Tokong intersection, here, which led to the complete shutdown of lifts due to severe damage.

Its council member, Lee Seng Hwai said an inspection following complaints by users found that the cause of lift damage was due to the presence of liquid on the wiring system and sensors, which in turn caused the relevant components to burn.

“The operations of all lifts were fully halted for the time being until repair work can be carried out.

“Additionally, the inspection found the mirrors on the bridge were broken, thereby increasing the safety risk not only for users but also for vehicles and motorcycles passing on the road below," he said in a statement today.

Lee said the pedestrian bridge was open to the public in 2023 and connects pedestrian paths from Jalan Fettes to Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang.

According to him, the lifts at the overhead bridge are very important especially for senior citizens, pregnant women as well as persons with disabilities (PWD) who are dependent on this facility to cross the road safely. Therefore, the damage directly denies the rights of and jeopardises the safety of these groups.

He added that the works of vandalism also tarnished the image of Penang and Malaysia in the eyes of tourists, especially in terms of the level of public awareness towards the maintenance of public facilities and the level of civilisation as a state known as a tourist destination.
