STOCKHOLM, Jan 13 (Bernama-dpa) -- A cargo ship stopped by Finland over damage to a data cable in the Baltic Sea has been allowed to leave, Finnish police said on Monday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

Investigations on board the Fitburg have been completed and authorities escorted the vessel from Kantvik harbour into international waters, police said in a statement.

The Fitburg came under scrutiny on December 31 after telecoms operator Elisa reported damage to a data cable linking the Finnish capital Helsinki with Estonia’s capital Tallinn.

When authorities stopped the vessel, its anchor chain was found to be deployed.

According to preliminary findings by Finnish and Estonian investigators, the Fitburg dragged its anchor for several kilometres along the seabed.

Police are investigating the case on suspicion of aggravated criminal damage, attempted aggravated criminal damage and serious disruption of telecommunications.

One crew member has been detained Finnish authorities, while three others have been barred from leaving the country.

The Fitburg had been en route from St Petersburg to Haifa when the incident occurred.
