AKPS On Right Track In Safeguarding Nation's Border Security - Saifuddin Nasution

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is on the right track and performing strongly in safeguarding the nation’s border security and sovereignty.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said as the newest agency under the Home Ministry (KDN), AKPS has made an impressive start by recording total seizures worth nearly RM82.1 million from operations at national entry points last year.

As such, he said KDN is giving full support to AKPS, including reviewing and amending relevant legislation to ensure smoother border operations.

“I, together with the ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Dr Awang Alik Jeman, will improve the AKPS Act if amendments are needed, and we will expedite them. Several areas have already been identified,” he told a press conference after a session with AKPS personnel here today.

Saifuddin said that it is also crucial for AKPS to be equipped with advanced entry-point control technology and that the agency has also been instructed to study best practices of foreign border agencies, including the Australian Border Force, for possible adoption.

Meanwhile, Saifuddin stressed that the AKPS intelligence and surveillance unit, led by its director-general, Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, must continue to be strengthened to support operations.

“I have given full discretion to the director-general to carry out recruitment in line with AKPS’ functions, and we will continue to provide full backing. Intelligence does not come automatically.

“We need clear strategies, proper planning and, most importantly, accurate intelligence to ensure the success of operations,” he said.

AKPS was officially established on Jan 1, 2024, with 104 core positions at headquarters led by a director-general. On Jan 3, 2024, the Cabinet approved the agency’s policy framework, marking a key step in strengthening its role and functions.
