Applications For Tunku Abdul Rahman Scholarship Open Today

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Applications for the Tunku Abdul Rahman Scholarship (BTAR) are open officially from today in conjunction with the birthday of Malaysia’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said applications are open till April 8 for all Malaysians who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at local public or private universities in various fields, adding that the opening of applications on the 123rd anniversary of Tunku Abdul Rahman’s birthday reflected the continuity of his vision that emphasised education being the bridge to the future and the foundation of a nation state.

“BTAR is a comprehensive scholarship to support high potential students in need to further their studies at local public and private universities.

“The scholarship uses a holistic approach regardless of background, challenges, living situations and candidates’ aspirations,” he said at an event commemorating Tunku Abdul Rahman at National Museum here today.

Applications can be made at the Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman website at the link: www.yayasantar.org.my , he added.

He also stressed that the first prime minister’s legacy and philosophy in building a nation state continues to be the core for the National Unity Ministry to strengthen unity in a multiracial society that is growing in complexity.

Tunku Abdul Rahman not only led the country to independence on Aug 31, 1957 but built a strong framework of statehood based on democratic values, rule of law and unity among its people that remain relevant to this day, Aaron said.

“In a multiracial country, Tunku bravely introduced power sharing and consensus building, an approach that was ahead of its time. He said that “We must think as Malaysians, not as Malays, Chinese or Indians.” he added.

Aaron said the idea of a nation state now will be reemphasised by his ministry as a means to unite, especially when the country is facing social polarisation, differing views and gaps in understanding.

A nation state, he explained, refers to a sovereign country where its people share a national identity, common values and a spirit of togetherness as Malaysians, based on the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara.

“To ensure this aspiration is understood, followed and accepted by all, the National Unity Ministry will conduct various initiatives, including engagement sessions, roundtable discussions, town hall session and the organising of a Nation State Conference in September,” he added.
