KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysian diplomatic missions abroad have cancelled their planned Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house events in adherence to the government’s move to exercise greater prudence and moderation in public expenditure amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.
Malaysia’s Embassy in Thailand has announced the cancellation of the Malaysian diaspora gathering in the country in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, which had been scheduled for April.
The embassy’s counsellor, Jarin Sijaya Abdul Hathi, said in a brief notice that the cancellation was part of a move to promote more prudent spending amid global economic uncertainty.
The Embassy of Malaysia in Washington, D.C. also announced the cancellation of its Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house that was initially scheduled for March 20.
In a notice posted on Facebook, the embassy said it would not be able to proceed with hosting the event, in line with the government’s commitment.
The High Commission of Malaysia in Bandar Seri Begawan has also cancelled its Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house that was initially scheduled for April 4.
In a notice, the High Commission said the decision was made in line with the government’s commitment to exercise greater prudence and moderation in public expenditure.
Both missions expressed appreciation for the community’s understanding and continued support.
They added that the missions remain committed to serving the Malaysian diaspora and strengthening bonds as one Malaysian family abroad.
The missions also wished the public a blessed and meaningful Hari Raya Aidilfitri in advance.
Bernama has also learned that the embassies of Malaysia in Helsinki and Beijing will not be organising official Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House events this year.
The government’s cost-saving measures, including not holding Aidilfitri open houses and limiting overseas trips by ministers and officials, underscore its commitment to a more disciplined fiscal management.
The announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday drew praise from various segments of society, including consumer associations, youth groups, and members of the public. Many described it as a proactive approach to reviewing non-critical spending.
