MOSCOW, March 16 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Moscow's Tagansky Court fined the Telegram messaging app 35 million rubles (US$432,758) for failing to remove prohibited content calling for extremist activity, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported from the courtroom on Monday.

Telegram was held administratively liable for five counts of violating Part 4 of Article 13.41 of the Russian Code of Administrative Offences, which is failure of a website owner or owner of an information resource to delete information or an internet page if the obligation to delete such information is provided for by Russian law.

“The court finds Telegram Messenger Inc guilty and imposes a penalty in the form of an administrative fine of 7 million rubles for each violation,” the judge announced.

According to the case materials, the charges were filed for refusing to remove content containing calls for extremist activity.
