KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 (Bernama) -- Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) recorded an increase of up to 102 per cent in passengers during Hari Raya Aidilfitri period from March 17 to 29, further solidifying its role as the backbone of the people's mobility.
In a statement today, KTMB announced that the Electric Train Service (ETS) recorded 292,033 passengers, a 109 per cent increase compared to last year.
"This surge reflects the continued trust of users in the ETS as the primary choice for faster, more comfortable, and efficient long-distance travel, especially in the face of increased traffic during the festive season.
"Additionally, the Intercity service, namely the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran (ERT), recorded a total of 20,969 passengers compared to 14,039 passengers in 2025, showing an increase of 49 per cent," according to the statement.
KTMB also announced that the Aidilfitri Express Service (ELA) recorded 1,671 passengers through six services for the East Coast and Northern routes during that period.
According to the statement, this year's operational capacity has been strengthened through the full utilisation of the new ETS3 train, which increases seating capacity and operational efficiency.
"KTMB also introduced the EMU Plus service specifically for the KL Sentral-Ipoh route, thereby helping to reduce demand pressure and allow for a smoother passenger flow during peak hours," said the statement.
Meanwhile, KTMB chief executive officer Datuk Azlan Shah Al Bakri said that 314,673 tickets were successfully sold during that period, equivalent to a rate of 99.99 per cent.
"This shows a high level of confidence in rail services as the people's primary choice. From an operational aspect, the punctuality performance of ETS increased to 95 per cent compared to 94 per cent the previous year.
He added that KTMB continues to emphasise real-time operational monitoring, asset maintenance, and mitigation measures to ensure service remains stable during the increase in passenger movement.
