SHAH ALAM, April 2 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) is undertaking a benchmarking programme in Japan’s renowned ceramic regions as part of efforts to strengthen Malaysia-Japan cooperation in cultural heritage, higher education and creative industries.
In a statement, UiTM said the delegation, led by its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib, is visiting key ceramic centres in Tajimi, Seto and Tokoname, which are internationally recognised for the longstanding excellence in ceramic craftsmanship, innovation and industry integration.
The four-day programme started yesterday (April 1) and includes engagements with leading institutions such as the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Centre, the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, and several prominent universities, including Nagoya Institute of Technology and Aichi University of the Arts.
The engagement also supports Malaysia’s aspiration to set up the Tengku Permaisuri Selangor (TPS) Ceramic Hub, as a centre of excellence integrating education, research, design, industry and cultural heritage.
The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, who is the UiTM Pro Chancellor, are gracing the programme.
Meanwhile, Shahrin said UiTM aims to learn from Japan’s experience in integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern technology and industry practices.
“UiTM values the opportunity to learn from Japan’s distinguished ceramic ecosystems, particularly in areas of technical excellence, design innovation and institutional collaboration.
“We look forward to fostering long-term partnerships that will benefit both Malaysia and Japan,” he also said.
He added that UiTM expressed its appreciation for the continued support and cooperation of Japanese institutions and stakeholders, and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening academic exchange, research collaboration, and cultural diplomacy between Malaysia and Japan.
